I am thinking the ALT toggle switch you showed me is the key to making this work. I didn’t know what I was doing and the R never popped up in the HUD but the word “ALTITUDE” showed up blinking in the middle of the HUD display. In the UFC, I was playing with the RALT button (second button down on the right set of buttons in your top pic) and it takes me to a different screen where you can set several baro and radar altitudes. All the real F-18 videos and pilot walkthroughs of the videos have the radar altimeter set at 800 ft. ![]() Primarily what I want to do is set my AGL altitude to 800ft to enter the overhead break at 350 kts (like is SOP for the real jets flying a carrier landing pattern). Based on your pic, one thing I definitely wasn’t doing is toggling the ALT switch in your first pic. I tried several different things last night and could never get it to work. I am obviously not doing something right to set it. When set to radar on the ground, you will see R height 5 or 6 feet, depending on aircraft weight. Good news is most, maybe all audible warning are in the code, waiting. Audible warnings not fully functioning yet. GPWS system is not fully functioning yet. If your at 500ft, r/alt on and approaching a hill at 600ft, you are going to fly into it…unless it has a very long, shallow rise to the top, so that the system can cope with it. It is down looking only, not forward-down looking…Meaning the height directly below the aircraft, not what is approaching below the aircraft. This is meant for slower speeds and well below 200kts when low. If your zippy-dodaw’ing along at 400kts, don’t expect it to keep maintaining r/alt. R/alt is working and will keep up with small variations in agl, but remember: Radar agl will not function if bank angle is above 20 degrees or so. **Note-need to confirm this, it may need to be manually reset(toggle to baro and back to rdr) **It will then switch back to radar height when you drop below 5’000agl. It will flash, then switch to B when you go above 4,999ft agl.ī will flash continuously if above 5’000agl and then will indicate baro height, if toggled to radar. ![]() When radar set, it will show R in the hud. ![]() When set to baro, nothing will be indicated. Toggle switch is on center panel to engage radar or baro. But r/alt is an pilot relief(autopilot) setting, like b/alt.
